1) He has cancer and he died, but before he did he sent one million dollars to the Central Asia Institute (CAI).

2) It took three years to build the school, everyone went to a ceremony to hold Greg's baby, and everyone went to the CAI. This is interesting to me because in the U.S. people don't go to a  ceremony to see a baby and hold it, or go into the CAI just to help people we don't know, or you want to take three years to build a school in the of nowhere.
