This summer, seven educators from Unity Point had the opportunity to experience the largest education and technology conference in the nation. We will use this space to share notes, reflections, new ideas and inspiration taken with us from this event. The theme, "Convene, Connect, Transform" was woven throughout our days. How has NECC 2008 effected you? What was your most inspiring experience? What did you connect with to transform your classroom?

James Surowiecki,
Opening Keynote

Wisdom of the
Crowds (PBS – Science Now) What was truly exciting
about this keynote was the fact I just recently watched a PBS special on the
exact same concept and examples Mr. Surowiecki used.
His main example was Sir Francis Galton who wanted to test his theory that
groups of common “folk” were in an essence incompetent when trying to guess the
weight of a cow. His results were shocking, because despite no one guessing the
actual weight of the cow, collectively they were remarkably accurate.

To put this into perspective for educators, it takes a
village to educate/raise a child. This is no new concept to education, but
rarely is it seen. Yes, we all “work” together to mold the minds of tomorrow,
but we lack one concept “collaboration”. No “one” teacher can educate every
student, however working together and utilizing each person’s individual talent
is crucial in this age of NCLB.

What makes true collaboration hard (ego, insecurity,

Francis Galton and his experiment (check it out)

Poster Sessions (Tom)

I attended various poster sessions
that dealt with emerging Web 2.0
technology. The projects incorporated Podcasting, Video-Teleconferencing,
on-line collaboration, and some sort of “global awareness”.

Many teachers were using free software and on-line resources
to conduct multi-modal learning for their students.

One school in Minot,
ND created a time-line that went
down their hallways simply by researching on-line specific topics. Though
technology was limited it allowed the whole school to visual be a part of the
project. The projects covered nanotechnology to diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) heard about their project and
flew a team to North Dakota.
Needless to say, the Superintendent I spoke too, they were amazed by all the
open space and cows. What is amazing about this project is how something so
simple and small developed into a global issue that will forever be etched in
the minds of the students, faculty, and community.

Another Poster Session that stood out was the Global Explorers project. A
group of students collaborated with students from Columbia. They utilized e-mail, skype, wikis, Podcasts, blogs,
video-teleconferencing…you name it. This project is interesting in how it
developed. It started out basic with e-mail, then blogs, then wikis,
conferencing, etc… As the students became more and more involved, they wanted
quicker feedback and response from their counterparts in Columbia. This is amazing in the sense that
the students directed the teacher into the direction they wanted to go. Their
podcast is available on iTunes
here.

There were many exciting Poster Sessions and I know that
others in the group will also be posting.

The vendor floor was amazing. Chris, Alisa and I had a chance to compare several flavors of mini laptops. We are most interested in the Intel Classmate PC and the OLPC XO.

We need pix of the bull-riding - please post!!

The Vendor Floor was “overwhelming” in many aspects. There
is a lot of repetition in the hardware and software industry vying for
educational dollars. While going through I could notice how important “marketing”
plays in what “we” as educators see as beneficial. The Promethean,
BrainPop, Sunburst, etc… booths were massive and eye
catching. For me, I enjoy the “little” guy and sometimes the simplistic nature
of what they have to offer. However, at the NECC
I found myself disappointed in what the “little” guy had to offer. As educators
we must keep an open mind to what is truly beneficial for our students. In this
day and age, students demand “engaging” activities and for the most part the
bigger vendors deliver. The best product however, is only as great as the
person implementing it.

I was not wowed by any emerging technology at the conference, but I was “wowed”
with how companies and educators were using some of the existing Web 2.0 technologies (Podcasting, Wikis, Google Earth, etc.) to look at education through a different
light. I “truly” believe we are seeing a significant shift in education, but if
not built on a solid pedagogy it will crumble. The group that went to NECC has
a different perspective and specialty area that allows for a tremendous amount of
discussion. I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s ideas and thoughts.

How To Use This Wiki Site

How to use this wiki site
You can use this wiki site to share knowledge, brainstorm ideas, collaborate with your team on a design, create an instruction guide, build an encyclopedia of knowledge, or just write down daily information in an easily accessible and modifiable format.

Editing wiki pages
This wiki site provides what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) editing. To edit a page, click Edit at the top of the page. You can insert tables and pictures with the click of a button. When you are happy with your changes you can click OK to update the page.

Creating links to pages
You can link to another page in this wiki site by enclosing the name of the page in double brackets on the edit form. For example, type [[Home]] to create a link to the page named Home and [[How to use this wiki site]] to create a link to this page.

To create a link to a page and have the link display different text than the page name, type a pipe character (|) after the page name, and then type the display text. For example, type [[Home|Home Page]] to create the link labeled Home Page that points to the page named Home.

To display double opening or closing brackets without making a link, type a backslash before the two brackets. For example, \[[ or \]].

Creating pages
There are two main ways to create a new page in your wiki site:

Create a forward link to another page and then click on it to create the page:
This is the recommended way to create a page because it is easier for people to find the page when another page links to it.

Forward links to pages that do not exist have a dashed underline. Start by adding the link (follow the Creating links to pages process earlier on this page). Click the link to go to the Create Page form where you can start typing your content.

Create a page that is not linked to any other:
On the Quick Launch, click Wiki Pages. Then, on the New menu, click New Wiki Page.
This takes you to the Create Page form where you can start typing your content.

Managing your wiki site
You can manage the pages in your wiki site by clicking Wiki Pages on the Quick Launch. This takes you to the wiki page library where you can manage the pages with all of the functionality of a Windows SharePoint Services document library.

Restoring a page
If you need to restore a previous version of a page, click History at the top of the page. You can then click on any of the dates to view the page as it existed on that date.
