I think it is because they don't have someone making them do their chores and working hard.

because they respect him very much and since he knows how to direct people it makes it easier to understand what to do. Also he is second in charge.

Because when John Smith was there, he made them work hard, so when he left they thought they didn't have to work as hard as they did when John Smith wasn't there because not anyone would tell them to keep working hard except John Smith.

Since Captain John Smith, who was like the leader left to go find the Orient, the men stopped working because they thought that other people could do their chores and they just took embers from other peoples fires.

I think why they stopped working is when Caption Smith was there he had the rule whoever doesn't work doesn't eat. Now since he isn't there they think they don't have to go by that rule.

John Smith is the one who said "if you do not work you do not eat"
and now that Smith is gone everyone is not working because John Smith is not there to tell them to work and so all of the people who have stopped working now depend on the lower class people to do there work for them.

John Smith is the who kind of takes care of the people. John Smith is the person who says if you do not work you do not eat. Since John Smith left the workers and the servants they don't have to work to eat.

After Captain John Smith is gone, most of them stopped working. I think that they were scared of Captain John Smith. When he was there, all the men were working hard together. They were also healthier when Captain John Smith was with them. I also think that most of the men follows people well, when they are there, and when they think that they are powerful.

Because John Smith was the one who said "if you don't work you don't eat" so they all the gentlemen stopped working

Jenny!!!!!!
Captain Smith was the one who was in charge of them.
When he was there, he made sure that everybody worked.
So when he was gone, they didn't want to work because nobody
was in charge.
