1. The high altitude plays a huge role in the story. When Greg Mortinson was climbing K2, the world's second largest mountain, he became dizzy and ill so he started going back down the mountain. He came to a trail that went two different directions. He accidentally took the wrong trail and  ended up in a town called Korphe. If Greg hadn't become ill from the high altitude he would never have ended up in Korphe.

2. When Greg got to Korphe he discovered that they had no school or doctor. The school teacher only came three days a week and the doctor lived a week's walk away from Korphe.

3. The quality of life in Korphe is much worse than mine. They are poor, they don't have a good education like I do, and they don't have a doctor nearby.
