Woodlawn Cemetery
The first Memorial Day was started by General John A. Logan on May 5, 1868 in Carbondale, Il. at Woodlawn Cemetery. Soldiers got the idea when they saw a widow bringing flowers to decorate a Civil War grave in Crab Orchard Cemetary (near Carbondale). By General Order No. 11,, Congress made Memorial Day an official holiday. |

This gravestone of Daniel Brush. is located in the center of Woodlawn Cemetary, Carbondale, Il. He was killed February 1890 while helping to cut down a large tree from the property set aside to build Brush Elementary School. A rope was tied around his waist to help guide the tree, but as it fell, the tree catapulted him into the air.
