Chapter 6
1. When Mortenson returns to Pakistan with money for the Korphe school, Abdul Shah, the watchman at the hotel, says, "By the merciful light of Allah Almighty, tomorrow we make much bargain (p. 32)." What does Shah mean? What do the act of bargaining and the mention of Allah reveal about Shah's culture? How is it similar or different to your culture?

2. What misunderstanding occurs in this chapter?

Comments

Erich

1) He means "By the great light of God, tomorrow we make much bargain (a good deal) witch he mean that in the morning they would by many supplies cheaply. That his culture is poor so they would bargain, Allah, God is an important part of their culture because they would do everything under God.It is different because we don't bargain as much because our culture is not as poor as theirs' also we do not pray or say thank you god every time something good happens.

2) Akhamalu's village ,Khane, wanted a school for their village and said that Greg would build a school for them, also that village thought he would build a Balti porter school, also Changazi's village, Kuardu, wanted a school too, and with all of them they argue, Greg thinks that the people are all selfish he hopes Korphe is not like the other towns.

1. Abdul said those words praying to his god that hopefully they will make good bargains. We just go to the store and pay for the item but Abdul had to bargain to get Greg the supplies he needed. We also do not thank or pray to god as much as they do.

2. The people of Khane, and Changazi want Greg to build a school for them and not Korphe.

1-  in there culture, they bargain for goods, in the united states, you pay the price that they give you, such as at the store you don't bargain for a lower price, you just pay it. they also have a different religion. we worship god, and they worship allah. ( which is like god i think)

2- Changazi and some of the village thought that greg was going to build a school for them instead of in korphe.

1. What Abdul Shah meant was that they would make lots of bargain, since God is with them. One way that their culture is different from ours is that the can bargain, but we just pay the price.
2. The people in Skardu thought that Greg was going to build a school for them, but Greg was actually going to buil the school for Korphe.

1) He means that their God gives them mercy, and they will bargain. That in their country they bargain to get things cheaper and  that they think their God will help them. It is different because I believe in Jesus Christ, and they believe in Allah.

2) People think that Greg is going to build a school for different villages.

1. Shah means that out of the kindness of god, and that tomorrow they were gonna go find school supplies for the school and bargain. There culture is different from ours because they  bargain in Pakistan but in the United States we don't bargain.

 2. The misunderstanding is that other villages thought Greg was going to build them a school, not for Korphe.

1.They have a different religion than us and the difference between our culture and their culture is that they have to bargain, or try to convince the seller to get a lower price for their things, as to we just pay whatever price it is.
2. Many tribes thought that Greg was building the school forthem but he was building it for Korphe.

Elaine

1. Shah meant that with God help they would get what they needed by bargaining.
2. The mis understanding that happens in this chapter is that in every village Greg goes to the leader thinks that Greg is going to build a school for them.
Elaine Chiteri at 4/29/2010 8:58 AM

Ch.6 Brian

1) He is going to help Greg bargain for his supplies.  If they don't bargain he might get taken advantage of and not have enough money to build the school.  It also shows that these communities need all the money they can get and the work they can get.
2) The mis understanding that Greg goes through is that every leader thinks that he is going to build a school for them.  Each one thinks that they are the one that is the most important at the time.

Hamzah

(1) Shah means that we will ask god for a bargain tomorrow. However when he says that we will ask god for a bargain, that relates a lot in my culture, because my language and their are similar and plus when we pray and ask god for help we are basically doing the same thing.

(2) And when Greg continues his journey to Korphe he meets his friend Changazi, but then Akhmalu invited Greg into his village but soon both Changazi and Akhmalu started to argue about who gets the school but Greg already decided that he was going to build the school for Korphe.

evan

he means that he wants to bargain  for him to stay and not leave

the misunderstaning is that they need a bridge before a school
Evan Meeker at 5/4/2010 1:05 PM

 Whitley

1. What he said means "By the great light of God, tomorrow we make much bargain". That means that in the morning they would trade and make good deals. That shows that in their culture they trade goods where in our culture we just pay money for our goods.

2. Changazi wanted Greg to build a school for Kuardo and Ahkmalu wanted Greg to build a school for Khane. So Changazi and Ahkmalu got int an arguement about who would get the school. But Greg knew that he wanted to build a school for Korphe.
